Material: Piss Ant's Josi Kat
sings songs dripping with blistering hostility and carnal
knowledge, backed by a machine-gun heavy sound. As she
erupts in the egotistical rage of "Your Best Sucks",
Kat evokes the aggressive sexuality of Joan Jett. The
power of this band lies in their attitude as opposed to their
lyrics, which are marked by over-the-top belligerence:
"Sex junkie, sex junkie, sex junkie whore/sex junkie, sex
junkie, give me some more."
Musicianship: Piss Ant's sound
is a full-frontal assault. Kat comes armed with a pouty
punk rock shout and enough lascivious dance moves to make the
stage blush. Bassist Amy Brandt slaps her instrument with
indian-rope-burn speed and tosses out moody backup vocals.
Drummer Jeff Duarte's cymbals quiver as he brutally pounds his
kit. And, Dave Foster's fine guitar playing allows Piss
Ant to cruise the territories of punk, metal and beyond.
Performance: Bombshell sexy in
a leather bustier, Kat crawled on the floor and shook her fist
in the air like someone who knows her way around a stripper's
pole and a restraining order. Brandt played until her
hands were a blur, her long blonde hair blowing under the club's
air conditioning vent like footage from MTV's Headbanger's Ball.
Duarte, imposing in a Pantera shirt and a ponytail, beat with a
rhythmic tattoo while Foster completed the onslaught.
Summary: What Piss Ant has to
offer is over-the-top brat-rock with an extra scoop of furious
libido. Perhaps that's what makes them so effective.
This powerful example of Girls Gone Wild could hold their own
operating at the most testosterone-pumped of gigs. In
fact, the next time you need to clean out your ear drums, check
out this band live.
